Pricing explained
Per-User vs Per-Job Pricing: Jobber, Housecall Pro and ServiceM8 for 1 to 5 Person Crews (2026)
Jobber charges by user tier plus $29 per extra user, Housecall Pro bundles 1, 5 or 8 users, and ServiceM8 charges by jobs per month with unlimited users. Here's what each costs as you go from 1 to 6 people, using official 2026 prices.
Prices checked Oct 30, 2026 on each vendor's official pricing page. Software companies change prices and run promos often, so confirm before you buy.
When you're one person, almost any field service app is affordable. The pricing model starts to matter when you hire your first helper, and again when you hire your fifth. Jobber, Housecall Pro and ServiceM8 each charge for growth in a different way, and the cheapest app for a solo owner isn't always the cheapest for a crew of three.
This guide compares the three meters side by side for crews of 1 to 6 people. Every number comes from each company's official pricing page or help center, checked on October 30, 2026. Prices are regular prices in USD and exclude sales tax and card processing fees.
Three ways to charge for a growing crew
- Jobber: user tiers plus $29 per extra user. Connect and Grow come in 1, 5, 10 and 15-user tiers, and every plan card says you can add users for $29/mo each. Core is sold as a 1-user plan. Jobber defines a user as anyone who accesses the account to view or manage the team's schedule, in the office or in the field.
- Housecall Pro: bundles of 1, 5 or 8 users. Basic includes 1 user, Essentials 5 and MAX 8. The pricing page lists $35/mo per additional user on MAX, and Housecall Pro's help center says additional logins are available only on MAX plans. In practice, Basic and Essentials are capped.
- ServiceM8: jobs per month, unlimited users. Every paid plan includes unlimited staff. You pay by how many new jobs you create each month: 50 on Starter, 150 on Growing, 500 on Premium. The Free plan is for 1 user and 30 jobs.
The plans and prices
| App | Plan | Price | Who's included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jobber | Core | $29 / $49 | 1 user (+$29 per extra user) |
| Connect | 1 user $99 / $139; 5 users $149 / $199 | +$29 per extra user | |
| Grow | 1 user $149 / $199; 5 users $229 / $299 | +$29 per extra user | |
| Housecall Pro | Basic | $59 / $79 | 1 user |
| Essentials | $149 / $189 | 5 users | |
| MAX | $299 / $329 | 8 users, +$35/mo per additional user | |
| ServiceM8 | Free | $0 | 1 user, 30 jobs a month, texts 10¢ each |
| Starter | $29 | Unlimited users, 50 jobs a month | |
| Growing | $79 | Unlimited users, 150 jobs a month | |
| Premium | $149 | Unlimited users, 500 jobs a month | |
| Premium Plus | $349 | Unlimited users, 1,500+ jobs, extra jobs 20¢ each |
ServiceM8 shows text messaging as free on its paid plans. Jobber and Housecall Pro both publish a month-to-month price that's higher than the headline annual price. See our monthly vs annual billing guide for what that means over a year.
What you'd pay as the crew grows
To compare like with like, the Jobber column uses Connect, the first Jobber plan with automated client reminders and automatic payments. (Jobber Core is cheaper, at $29 plus $29 per extra user billed annually, but Core doesn't send reminders.) Housecall Pro uses the cheapest plan that allows that many users. ServiceM8 doesn't change with headcount, so its column depends on how many jobs you do.
| People who need a login | Jobber Connect | Housecall Pro | ServiceM8 (set by jobs, not people) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $99 / $139 | Basic $59 / $79 | Free $0 (up to 30 jobs) or Starter $29 (up to 50) |
| 2 | 1 user + 1 extra: $128 / $168 | Essentials $149 / $189 | Starter $29 (50 jobs), Growing $79 (150) or Premium $149 (500) |
| 3 | 5-user tier $149, or $197 month to month (1 user + 2 extras) | Essentials $149 / $189 | Same: $29, $79 or $149 by job count |
| 4 to 5 | 5-user tier: $149 / $199 | Essentials $149 / $189 | Same: $29, $79 or $149 by job count |
| 6 | 5-user tier + 1 extra: $178 / $228 | MAX $299 / $329 | Same: $29, $79 or $149 by job count |
The jumps to watch:
- Housecall Pro's first hire. Going from 1 to 2 users moves you from Basic to Essentials: +$90 a month billed annually, +$110 month to month. Users 3, 4 and 5 then cost nothing extra.
- Housecall Pro's sixth hire. Essentials caps at 5, so person number 6 means MAX: +$150 a month annually. You do get users 7 and 8 included, and MAX adds features like recurring service plans and route optimization.
- Jobber's tier boundaries. Each extra Jobber user is $29, so it's a smooth climb, but always price both options. At 3 users, the 5-user Connect tier ($149 annual) beats 1 user plus two extras ($157). Month to month it's the other way round ($197 vs $199).
- ServiceM8's job limits. Headcount is free, but every new job card uses one job credit. ServiceM8's help center says each future visit of a recurring job activates by creating a new job card, so a weekly client is about four credits a month. A quote that turns into a work order doesn't use a second credit. If you go over, ServiceM8 says you can keep working for 7 days before being asked to upgrade.
Three example crews
Owner plus one helper, handyman work, about 40 jobs a month:
- ServiceM8 Starter: $29/mo
- Jobber Connect, 1 user + 1 extra: $128/mo annual or $168 no commitment (or Jobber Core + 1 extra at $58 annual, without automated reminders)
- Housecall Pro Essentials: $149/mo annual or $189 monthly
Three-person cleaning crew, about 120 recurring visits a month:
- ServiceM8 Growing: $79/mo (120 fits under 150)
- Jobber Connect, 5-user tier: $149/mo annual or $197 no commitment (1 user + 2 extras)
- Housecall Pro Essentials: $149/mo annual or $189 monthly
Five-person lawn crew, about 450 visits a month in peak season:
- ServiceM8 Premium: $149/mo (450 fits under 500; over 500 means Premium Plus at $349)
- Jobber Connect, 5-user tier: $149/mo annual or $199 no commitment
- Housecall Pro Essentials: $149/mo annual or $189 monthly
The lawn crew shows where job-based pricing stops being a bargain. Short, frequent visits pile up job credits quickly, while Jobber and Housecall Pro don't count jobs at all.
Price isn't the whole story
The three apps put features on different plans, so the cheapest line above isn't automatically the best deal:
- ServiceM8 lists booking reminders, on-the-way texts, two-way SMS, quote follow-ups, automated payment follow-ups, staff GPS, auto routing and automatic time tracking on every plan, including Free. Job profitability, markup billing and pricing strategies start on Premium ($149). Its US page lists QuickBooks Online and Xero integrations on every plan.
- Jobber Connect includes automated reminders, automatic payments, checklists, routing, GPS, time tracking and QuickBooks Online and Xero sync. Two-way texting and job costing need Grow. Our Jobber Core vs Connect vs Grow guide lists every difference.
- Housecall Pro Basic lists a price book, job costing and review management. Essentials adds routes, flat-rate pricing, checklist automations, employee GPS tracking, commissions and QuickBooks Online sync.
Card processing is extra on all three. Jobber lists 2.9% + 30¢ for online card payments and Housecall Pro says "as low as 2.59%." ServiceM8's pricing page doesn't list a card rate, so ask before you sign up.
Which pricing model fits your crew?
Choose ServiceM8 if: you're adding helpers but your job count is modest (under about 150 a month), especially for quote-heavy trades like handyman, electrical or plumbing work. Try ServiceM8 free for 14 days
Choose Jobber if: you'll grow one hire at a time and want each new person to cost a predictable $29, or you run high-volume recurring routes where job counts would push you up ServiceM8's tiers. Try Jobber free for 14 days
Choose Housecall Pro if: you're solo and want its Basic feature set, or you already have 3 to 5 people and can use all of Essentials' seats. Plan ahead for the jump to MAX at person six. Try Housecall Pro free for 14 days
Before you sign up: count the people who actually need a login (office staff count too), then pull last month's job count from your calendar. Those two numbers decide which of these meters is cheapest for you. For crews past 8 people, see ServiceTitan vs Housecall Pro vs Jobber, which prices 10 and 15-person teams.
Frequently asked questions
Which field service app is cheapest for a 2-person crew?
On published prices, ServiceM8: its Starter plan is $29/mo with unlimited users and 50 new jobs a month (Growing is $79 for 150). Jobber Connect with 1 user plus one $29 extra user is $128/mo billed annually ($168 with no commitment). Housecall Pro needs Essentials for a second user: $149/mo billed annually or $189 monthly (all checked Oct 30, 2026).
Can you add a single user to Housecall Pro Basic or Essentials?
Housecall Pro's help center says additional logins are available only on MAX plans. Basic includes 1 user, Essentials 5 and MAX 8, and the pricing page lists $35/mo per additional user on MAX. So a second person means moving to Essentials, and a sixth means moving to MAX.
How much does an extra user cost on Jobber?
$29/mo each, according to every plan card on Jobber's pricing page. Jobber also sells Connect and Grow in 5, 10 and 15-user tiers, so check whether the next tier is cheaper than adding users one at a time. For example, 3 users on Connect cost $157/mo annual as 1 user plus 2 extras, but the 5-user tier is $149.
Does ServiceM8 really have unlimited users?
Yes on paid plans. ServiceM8's US pricing page lists unlimited staff and users on Starter ($29), Growing ($79), Premium ($149) and Premium Plus ($349). The Free plan is 1 user. What you pay for is new jobs per month: 30 on Free, 50 on Starter, 150 on Growing, 500 on Premium and 1,500+ on Premium Plus.
What happens if I go over my ServiceM8 job limit?
ServiceM8 says you can keep creating jobs and working as normal for another 7 days. If your monthly plan resets in that time, your job credits reset. Otherwise you're prompted to upgrade. Premium Plus lists additional jobs at 20¢ each.
Is per-user or per-job pricing better for a small crew?
Per-job pricing (ServiceM8) is usually cheaper for a crew doing modest volume, because adding helpers costs nothing. Per-user pricing (Jobber, Housecall Pro) is more predictable if you do lots of short visits, like weekly lawn or cleaning routes, where job counts climb fast. Estimate your monthly jobs and headcount and price both.
