If you're a small contractor (painter, handyman, remodeler, fence or deck builder) and you just want to send a professional estimate, turn it into an invoice and get paid, Square Invoices and Invoice Simple are two of the most common choices. They take opposite approaches to pricing. Square charges nothing monthly and makes its money on processing. Invoice Simple charges a subscription that scales with how many invoices you send, and charges processing fees.

Every number below is from Square's and Invoice Simple's official pages, checked on October 19, 2026.

What it really costs: three contractor scenarios

We calculated the monthly total (subscription plus card fees) assuming every invoice is paid by card online. All figures come from the rates above.

Our calculations from published rates, Oct 19, 2026.
ScenarioSquare FreeInvoice Simple (cheapest plan that fits)
3 invoices of $500 ($1,500/mo)$50.40$60.81 (Essentials $6.99 + $53.82 fees)
10 invoices of $500 ($5,000/mo)$168.00$194.39 (Plus $14.99 + $179.40 fees)
4 invoices of $2,500 ($10,000/mo)$331.20$372.95 (Premium $21.99 for deposits + $350.96 fees)

Square comes out ahead in each case, because its card fee is lower and there's no subscription. At about $12,000 or more a month in online card payments, Square Plus ($49/mo, 2.9% + 30¢) starts to beat Square Free: the 0.4-point saving on $12,250 is $49.

The bigger lever is bank transfers. A $2,500 invoice paid by ACH costs $25 on Square Free, $10 on Square Plus (because of the cap), and $15 on Invoice Simple (also capped). On big remodel invoices, asking customers to pay by bank transfer saves real money on either app.

Where Square Invoices wins

  • No monthly fee and no invoice cap. A slow month costs you nothing.
  • Deposits and payment reminders on the free plan. You can collect a materials deposit and set a separate due date for the balance.
  • Contracts with e-signature, including AI-assisted clauses, on every plan.
  • Estimates by email, text or link. Square Plus adds multi-package estimates (good-better-best) and automatic conversion of accepted estimates into invoices.
  • Free next-day transfers to your bank, plus Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android with no hardware.

Watch out for: 3.5% + 15¢ on keyed-in cards and cards on file, and no custom invoice templates on the free plan. Square Free gives phone support only for your first 90 days (6am to 6pm PT, Monday to Friday).

Where Invoice Simple wins

  • Simplicity. It does estimates, invoices, receipts and payments, without the rest of a point-of-sale system. Its pricing page shows a 4.9 rating from 266,819 reviews.
  • Photos and your signature on documents from the Plus plan, which is handy for before-and-after shots on a job.
  • Client signatures, premium templates and deposits on Premium.
  • You can let clients cover the processing fee, where that's allowed in your state.

Watch out for: the invoice caps on Essentials (3/mo) and Plus (10/mo), and card fees that are higher than Square's on every payment.
